The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) emphasizes the critical role of engaging a diverse range of stakeholders in the governance of migration, including governments, the private sector, the diplomatic community, international organizations, civil society, faith-based organizations, diaspora, and migrants themselves. It advocates for the establishment of regular and formal mechanisms for consultation and collaboration among these key actors to enhance the availability and flexibility of regular migration pathways. This highlights the importance of structured and inclusive dialogue in shaping migration governance.
To build on the momentum generated at the National Workshop on Regular Migration Pathways, held in Abuja, Nigeria on 13 and 14 December 2023, continued dialogue among governments, the private sector, the diplomatic community, international organizations, civil society, faith-based organizations, diaspora, migrants and other stakeholders is essential for creating an inclusive, cooperative, and rights-based approach to migration governance, especially when it comes to expanding and formalizing regular migration pathways. Such collaboration ensures that policies on regular migration are coherent, effective, sustainable, and garner broad public support.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria invites you to this side event, which aims to facilitate continued engagement between stakeholders, provide a platform to deepen collaborations, explore innovative approaches, and outline the next steps for ensuring that regular migration pathways are accessible, inclusive, and sustainable, within Nigeria and on the continent of Africa, as well as at the global level. The event will provide a platform for discussing actionable strategies for sustaining and enhancing the development and expansion of regular migration pathways that serve all migrants, including those in situations of vulnerability, as well as foster partnerships, and best practices in implementing migration pathways such that national and international development goals can be accelerated. The conclusions drawn from this side event will contribute to the Africa Regional Review of the GCM, focusing on effective partnerships to uphold migrant rights and promote sustainable development through safe, orderly and regular migration pathways.
