IOM Provides Operational Support to National Emergency Management Agency
On 13 August 2015, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided information technology (IT) equipment worth 1.8 million naira to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at its headquarters in Abuja. This assistance was provided within the framework of the project “Strengthening Humanitarian Response Capacity in North East Nigeria through Displacement Tracking, Monitoring and Information Dissemination” also known as the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) project. The DTM project is being implemented by IOM and NEMA with funding from the American government’s Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance.
The equipment, which is to be used in NEMA’s Headquarters in Abuja and in its zonal offices in Adamawa, Borno and Gombe states, included five Printers with toners, three laptops and three modems. The equipment is expected to contribute to efficient operations across the agency, particularly those related to the gathering and analysis of figures on internally displaced persons (IDPs) in north east Nigeria.
Muhammad Sani Sidi, Director-General of NEMA expressed his appreciation for IOM’s support to the agency, which went beyond the provision of equipment. According to the Director-General, “We [NEMA] are enjoying our relationship with IOM, and are especially grateful for the Organization’s expertise on tracking of displacement in the country. The DTM project has ensured that there are reliable and credible figures available on internally displaced persons in Nigeria”.
Since July 2014, IOM has been collaborating with the government of Nigeria to provide humanitarian assistance to Nigeria’s internally displaced persons as a result of the escalating humanitarian crisis in the country’s north east. This assistance has included the gathering of data on the displacement in the north east, provision of psychosocial support, emergency shelter and essential non-food items.
