The situation in north-east Nigeria is exacerbated by limited access to, and unsafe, water, as well as inadequate hygiene and sanitation services. Apart from the direct lifesaving needs in terms of water, the crisis-affected population remains highly endemic for diseases, including diarrhea and cholera.
IOM’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activities and services aim to ensure access to safe water facilities and services through the drilling, installation, maintenance and rehabilitation of boreholes. IOM also works towards the improvement of hygiene and sanitation outcomes through the construction, operation and maintenance of hygiene and sanitation facilities (latrines, showers, handwashing stations, etc.). Additionally, the Organization aims to enhance sanitation and hygiene conditions at the community level by establishing, training and equipping existing and community-based WASH committees. IOM WASH is leading the Nigeria WASH Sector technical working group (TWG).
